Land Acknowledgement

The Community Roots School is located in modern-day Silverton, Oregon.

This place where we live and work has been, and continues to be, the ancestral lands and home of indigenous peoples since time immemorial. We honor the elders of both past and present, as well as future generations, of the Molalla and Kalapuya peoples who are today represented by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz. We express gratitude for their stewardship of the land we currently occupy.

We know that our presence here is the result of a treacherous history of colonization, land theft, and oppression.  As educators we acknowledge and assume the responsibility to share this important aspect of our local history with our students. We must help them to develop an appreciation for those who came before us and whose territory we now occupy. We must encourage our students, and ourselves, to pursue a journey of learning to better know, celebrate, and understand our current modern-day indigenous neighbors, with the goal of developing an understanding of how we can be better allies.

With this awareness of history and responsibility to the people who were here originally, to their living descendants, and to future generations, we speak this land acknowledgment here to be clear in our intentions for positive engagement as community members with Indigenous tribes, peoples and projects.
