How to Register
- Receive an application and fill it out in its entirety. Applications can be completed online Download a CRS Application: pdf application or word application.
- Applications will be accepted throughout the year.
- Attend an observation and orientation meeting between October and January to make sure our program is consistent with your family’s beliefs and philosophy concerning education.
- Applications received after the last Friday in February will be enrolled if spaces are available, or will be added to the waiting list after the lottery (when applicable) has taken place.
- If your child is identified for enrollment you will receive an Enrollment Packet prior to enrollment.
Lottery Process (when necessary)
- The lottery will be conducted by March 15th, if applicable, at Community Roots School or another designated location.
- The lottery will be conducted by an impartial third-party.
- The lottery is a public meeting and you are welcome to attend.
- If there are more applicants than spaces available in a given classroom, a lottery will be held for that classroom.
- Any child who currently attends Community Roots, will not be subject to the lottery.
- Children with a sibling already enrolled at Community Roots School will be automatically enrolled, unless there are more siblings than spaces available. In that event, siblings will be in the lottery as a separate group.

- The lottery drawing will rotate in choosing applicants for applicable classrooms. Names will be drawn from oldest to the youngest classrooms, when applicable.
Time Lines
- Currently enrolled students and siblings will have a deadline of the last Friday in January;
- In-district applicants have a deadline of the last Friday in February; and
- Out-of -district applicants have a deadline of July 15.
Scheduling a Visit
Interested persons may make an appointment with the Director who will assign a guide to coordinate a classroom visit. We believe that this attention to the needs of the children to work undisturbed will give observers a more accurate picture of the nature of a Montessori classroom, which is, after all, the reason for observing.
Given time without distraction or disruption, Montessori classrooms develop into normalized environments where children are absorbed in their work and confident of their ability to engage in learning either in small groups or alone. If observers and visitors come into the classroom before the children have learned to attend to their own work, the children will most certainly respond to the stimulation of observers and the very atmosphere that the observer has come to see will not exist.
Visitors will sign in at the office, wear/display a “Visitor” badge at all-times, and be escorted while on site.
Enrollment Policy
Registration applications can be submitted throughout the year. Applications can be submitted in-person, via e-mail or mail. Applications will be date stamped when received.
If space is available, the Community Roots School may admit students who do not reside in the SFSD. Nonresident students may only be accepted by Community Roots if District resident student enrollment is insufficient to fill the available spaces. Nonresident students who attended Community Roots during the previous school year and non-resident siblings will receive preference for attendance over new resident student applicants as explained below.
A child will be eligible for first grade if age six by September 1.
Community Roots will register and enroll students without regard to their status as special education students, if the student's IEP team determines that the school is the appropriate placement.
For a special education student who is not a resident of the District, ORS 338.165 shall apply, and Community Roots and the resident school district of such student shall be responsible for the provision of special education service to the student.
In-district applications received after the deadline will be offered enrollment or placed on the waiting list on a first come, first served basis.
Out-of-district applications will be placed on a waiting list until August 1. At which time available slots will be released and offered to out-of-district children.
